Inspect Bird Toys
Bird Toys are good for keeping your pet bird active and they also help with boredom. Smaller birds like mirrors and hanging toys but there again, be very careful as to which type you buy and how they are made. Also your bird may bond with the image of the bird in the mirror instead of you. So if you want to bond with your bird, avoid mirrors. If a bird can destroy the toy, chances are they will swallow some of the pieces which obviously is not good for their digestive tract but also can tear the linings of their esophagus and stomach. When buying a bird toy, inspect the toys you buy at a pet store and when you buy online buy only from web store that sell only safe bird toys like http://www.squidoo.com/choose-only-safe-bird-toys-. Most toys come with warning labels on them and have guidelines as to which toy would be better for your pet. When introducing a new toy, make sure you watch your bird play with the toy to make sure he/she is not taking it apart.

Choosing Safe Bird Toys
When choosing safe bird toys for your pet bird you need to keep in mind if you have a large bird or a small bird. If you choose the wrong toy your bird could get seriously injured. I have a cockatiel named Beaker II who, when he was just a baby, took apart a small toy with a wire cage hanger and impaled both his bottom and top beak. He had unbent the round cage hanger so the toy ended up at the bottom of the cage, took the beads and wood blocks off and somehow got the wire stem jabbed up through both his bottom and top beak. I took him to the vet and she pulled out the wire stem and said she was done. I asked her to put some kind of glue to plug the holes in his beak and she said she didn't have any crazy glue on hand and he would be fine. He was not. Part of the bottom beak broke off and and the top beak now grows at an incredible rate. He is 8 years old now. Every month since this happened I have to take him to the vet to have his beak tended to. It is very important choose the right toys for your bird. I have opened on online store http://www.squidoo.com/choose-only-safe-bird-toys- that only sells safe bird toys, like the indestructible bells shown here. Please post your comments on your experiences with toys and if you have any suggestions on toys that you liked for your bird that you felt were safe, let me know.

Birds love bells. They love the sound and will play with them off and on all day long. You must be careful though when buying a bird bell. Zinc and lead are found in many bell clappers. Both of these metals are harmful to birds. Large birds can dislodge the bell clapper in small bird bells, and the bell clappers can get stuck in their crop of the bird can swallow it. This is why it is so important to buy the right size bird bell. Sleigh bells are also dangerous. The bird can get it's beak caught in the slits in the bell and they could die from flapping around trying to get it off. Cylinder bells, pictured here are the best bells for birds. You will want to buy this type of bell. The ones sold on the site listed above are made from non-toxic paint, non-toxic metals and do not contain lead or zinc. The clapper is hidden high up inside, so it is virtually impossible for a bird to get at it. Make sure you choose the right size for your bird.
